Welcome to Venceremos the Novel

VenceremosBrooklyn-born Jay Cardinale, Vietnam War hero turned deserter, has fled to a commune in Canada. Aching to get back home he gets his shot at redemption in the form of a Faustian bargain: He can have a full pardon if he’ll go to Cuba and assassinate an American radical living there in exile.  Jay becomes a reluctant addition to the Venceremos Brigade, a group of idealistic American leftists heading south to work side-by-side with the Cubans in their crucial sugar cane harvest.  Once in Cuba, Jay cuts cane, gets political, plots murder, drinks with Hemingway’s ghost, makes Fidel laugh, turns twenty-one, falls in love and becomes a new man.

About the Book: While Venceremos falls into the literary tradition of Bildungsroman, the novel also illuminates the struggles many members of this generation faced as they entered adulthood — the struggle to forge identity, authenticity, and purpose in an era that was both fraught with unprecedented social conflict and ripe with unprecedented opportunity and possibility — a struggle that continues to resonate in American life today.

About the Title:  Venceremos is Spanish for, depending on the translator, "We Shall Win," "We Will Triumph," or "We Will Overcome." It has long been a rallying cry for South American revolutionaries. In our time it is most closely associated with Che Guevara.
